Ms. Shere Hurd

Welcome to my webpage! I have a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from Lees-McRae College, NC, and am certified in Middle Grades Language Arts and Elementary Education. I also have a Master's Degree in Reading Education from East Carolina University. I was homeschooled from third grade on, and graduated with my Bachelor's at the age of twenty. I immediately began to teach - and never stopped! 

I have worked in the field of education for nineteen years. At the age of twenty, for one year, I taught second grade at a private school in Virginia. I then taught three years as a middle school language arts teacher in a different NC county and, after moving to Jacksonville, was hired here at BFE! After teaching fifth grade for two years, I moved down to second grade again, and - thirteen years later -  I am still enjoying life as a second grade teacher! I have actually taught second grade in the same classroom this entire time :). Along with the most amazing coworkers, I persevered through Hurricane Florence and Covid, and I am SO PROUD of our students here at BFE, especially over the past several years. They have been truly heroic and displayed amazing resilience even under the most difficult of circumstances. 

On a more personal note, I live near the coast with my family, and I enjoy reading, gardening, cooking, fishing, swimming, boating, and skiing. I also play tennis and ride horses. We have five cats, one dog, and a baby catfish who has taken up residence in my classroom this year! I can't wait for the kids to meet him or her, and I look forward to another busy, rewarding year in second grade.
